Following a spate of EPs and singles comes the debut album by Tamaryn, entitled The Waves.

After collaborating with producer Rex John Shelverton (ex-Vue/The Audience/Portraits of Past), Tamaryn left New York and settled in Rex’s hometown of San Francisco to record their first full-length. Whereas Tamaryn’s earlier material was rooted in traditional goth-psych overtones, The Waves represents an incredible step forward in terms of her approach. These nine songs combine driving pop and lush balladry with layered, guitar-driven ethereal atmospheres, against which Tamaryn’s voice, languid and restrained, melts against its surface.

The Waves is a masterful collision of hypnotic psychedelia and bittersweet dream pop.

How to Dress Well - Love Remains

Tom Krell leads a double life. During the day, he’s a research fellow currently translating a book of post-Kantian philosophy in Cologne, Germany. But after work he’s making narcotized, below-fi R&B as How to Dress Well. In October of last year, Krell started posting batches of his clouded tunes to his blog. They’re marked by his piercing voice, which bears a resemblance to Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, or even Justin Timberlake at his most fragile and falsetto-y.

At this point, he’s got nearly 30 songs up for download, and the recently P4k-highlighted tracks “Decisions” and “Ready for the World” (which is due out as a 7” single on Lefse soon) are great places to start. Krell plans to make his live debut with a few European shows before returning to the U.S. in August.

Tu Fawning is a collective of songsmiths and multi-instrumentalists founded by Joe Haege (31Knots, Menomena) and Corrina Repp. After releasing the Secession EP (Polyvinyl) in 2008, the group doubled in size when longtime collaborators Toussaint Perrault and Liza Rietz joined full time last year.

Steeped in dark mystery, texture, and beauty that pours forth from an assortment of instruments including guitar, drums, piano, brass, and samples, Hearts on Hold is a polished, revealing record that perfectly complements fall's kaleidoscope-spectrum of leaves and crisp breezes that seductively overcomes lungs more accustomed to more temperate air. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the album's first single, "The Felt Sense," is a haunting piece where heart-pulsing drums contrast with Repp's soulful vocal performance, glossing over lyrics about lost love.

Hearts on Hold also marks the first official release from Provenance, which Tu Fawning began in accordance to its philosophy that art should take priority over the business of record-selling (The name of the label was chosen in reference to the place of origin, or the history of ownership of a work of art or literature). From the matching fun-house atmospheres with minimalist guitar riffs on "Sad Story," to the honeyed vocal harmonies of theatrical piano ballad "Apples and Oranges," to the reimagined rock 'n' roll swagger of "I Know You Now," the dynamic collection of music contained on the album shows that group has fully embraced these ideals.

Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz

Stevens, titled The Age Of Adz is, as they point out, his first LP in five years. As they also point out, “adz” is pronounced “odds.” And it’s the word for a cutting tool that is used to sculpt wood:

The title The Age of Adz is a reference to the apocalyptic art of Royal Robertson (1930—1997), a Louisiana-based sign-maker (and self-proclaimed prophet) who suffered from schizophrenia. Robertson’s work depicts his vivid dreams and visions of space aliens, futuristic automobiles, eccentric monsters and signs of the Last Judgment. Portions of Stevens’ album use Robertson’s work as an idealistic springboard and a selection of Robertson’s drawings (his primary media were poster board, magic marker, and glitter) appear throughout the album art.

Despite the strong narrative and biography mentioned in the press release, Asthmatic Kitty also says that the new album will have fewer biographies, historical bits, place names, etc., in the songs. They note that The Age Of Adz will instead focus on “… the personal and primal: love, sex, death, disease, illness, anxiety and suicide …” Although one of Stevens’s gifts is that he’s always been able to mix the personal and the primal with sweeping histories, biographies, and road maps.

Dragonette are a part-Canadian part-British electropop music band. They are currently signed to Mercury UK. They originally formed in Toronto, Canada in 2005.

The band is made up of Canadian singer Martina Sorbara, her husband Dan Kurtz, a brazilian that has lived in Canada since he was 4 years old, Joel Stouffer and Will Stapleton (who replaced original guitarist Simon Craig following the band’s move to London). Martina is a successful singer-songwriter in Canada, and Dan Kurtz a member of the popular livetronica trio The New Deal. Martina’s father is Greg Sorbara, Ontario’s Liberal Finance Minister. Martina has since referred to the work she produced as a solo artist as “tampon music”.

All of the band members, with the exception of Will Stapleton (born in London), are from Toronto, but now they all live in West London. Originally called “The Fuzz”, the band’s first gigs were touring the USA as support act for Duran Duran. Since then the band have gone on to support other major UK acts including New Order, Basement Jaxx and the Sugababes. They have recently completed a series of headline gigs in small venues in the UK and Canada, and performed at the Glastonbury Festival 2007. Prior to signing their record contract, the Dragonette (EP) was independently released as promo only and the songs have gained the attention of many critics such as the popular music blog Popjustice where they were named the #1 pop act to look out for in 2007. The band share management with the Scissor Sisters.

Tim Kasher - The Game Of Monogamy

Cursive and The Good Life frontman Tim Kasher is a prime example of how sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. His uneven warble, bi-polar song structures, and intensely confessional lyrics could easily equal disaster, yet somehow Kasher’s method works. He’s an unpolished everyman, composing from our collective internal monologue and dismissing shame so we can take an unflinching look at relationships, sex, and all other manner of desires. That brutal honesty is yet again present on The Game of Monogamy, Kasher’s solo debut after nearly two decades in the biz. And while his newfound symphonic leanings (hello, string section!) are welcome, the real soul of Monogamy is in its theme: Practically every song explores the relatable yo-yo of emotions that accompanies the transition between indiscreet youthfulness and faithful suburban adulthood. Perhaps Kasher’s appeal is more in the psychology behind his music than the music itself, but so what? We all need a good therapy session now and then.

Maximum Balloon

Maximum Balloon - Maximum Balloon

TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek's debut solo album under the name Maximum Balloon, complete with guest vocalists like David Byrne, Karen O, Little Dragon, Theophilus London, and his TVOTR bandmates Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, and lots of other Sitek buddies make guest appearances. The guy singing “Tiger” is Aku from the Brooklyn band Dragons of Zynth.

TV on the Radio guitarist and production guru Dave Sitek has at least one thing in common with my one-year-old daughter: They both really, really like balloons. Up above, you can see Sitek himself on the cover of the self-titled album from his new solo project, Maximum Balloon, carrying a big red one and looking like he might fly away. And in the video for first single “Tiger”, a gigantic dragon monster chases people through a field of balloons. Then, at the end, all those people break in half, and they all turn out to have a bunch of balloons inside.

If N.A.S.A. astronauts are planning a dance party in outer space, this is their go-to jam. It’s a glittery electro-pop strut, with layers of cascading synth blips and bleeps, clapping drum machine beats, and intergalactic funk bass grooves.

Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

Halcyon Digest is the upcoming fourth studio album by American indie rock band Deerhunter set to be released September 28, 2010. It will be the band's first album distributed exclusively by 4AD worldwide (previously 4AD only handled overseas distribution while Kranky Records handled it within the U.S) The album was self-produced with assistance from Ben Allen and was recorded at Chase Park Transduction studios in Athens, Georgia. The final track, "He Would Have Laughed" was recorded separately by Bradford Cox at Notown Sound in Marietta, GA and is a tribute to the late Jay Reatard.
About the title, Cox stated "The album's title is a reference to a collection of fond memories and even invented ones, like my friendship with Ricky Wilson or the fact that I live in an abandoned victorian autoharp factory. The way that we write and rewrite and edit our memories to be a digest version of what we want to remember, and how that's kind of sad."

Deerhunter is a band which formed in 2001 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The band consists of Bradford Cox (vocals, guitar, piano), Moses Archuleta (drums, synths), Lockett Pundt (guitar, organ, vocals) and Josh Fauver (bass, vocals).

The group began with the ambition of fusing the lulling hypnotic states induced by ambient and minimalist music with the klang and propulsion of garage rock. The band has weathered chaotic line-up changes, the death of a member, and much discouragement. Their live performances almost always leave audiences polarized, and have been referred to by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs in NME as bordering on “a religious experience.”

Solar Bears - She Was Coloured In

"Hailing from Ireland; Wicklow and Dublin to be precise, Solar Bears are
John Kowalski and Rian Trench, the sole producers and musicians on the
album 'She Was Coloured In'. They met and formed at Pulse Sound
Engineering School, started recording and were swiftly picked up by
Planet Mu. The album follows in the wake of expectation laid down by
their recent "Inner Sunshine EP" and a series of remixes.

Solar Bears’ music is the soundtrack to a good life. Their song writing
and production has a languid, pastoral grace that intertwines rock and
electronics, twisting melodies through prog rock’s structures and sounds,
occasionally making sharp turns into more tense post rock territory,
sliding between longer tracks and short mood-setting miniatures. The
album mixes analogue electronica with the quietly epic perspective and
shimmering neon synths of late 70’s, early 80’s Kosmiche music and the
synth pop it informed.

‘She Was Coloured In’ starts with the cosmic disco intro of ‘Forest Of
Fountains’ before moving straight into gorgeous watery Rhodes and vocoder
with ‘Children Of The Times’. ‘Twin Stars’ takes huge synth lead chords
and builds up the drama with synthlines anad arpeggios. By ‘Head
Supernova’, we’re floating in beatless ambience, with a miniature that is
reminiscent of chilly 80’s synthscapes. The album starts moving again
with the sophoric trance of ‘Cub’, before synth pop is evoked with the
laidback evocative arpeggios of ‘Hidden Lake’. ‘Dolls‘ pits a children’s
choir against rolling guitars while ‘Neon Colony’ mixes gliding
bottleneck guitar and triumphant synths. The album finishes with
'Perpetual Meadow’s' sleepy sunkissed drone before stopping abruptly and
making you drop down to earth. Spend some time with the Solar Bears."

Piano Magic:
From its conception as a bedroom-studio hobby in Summer 1996, Piano Magic’s trajectory has never been textbook - random at best. Originally, a self-confessed revolving door operation - musicians arriving, contributing and leaving as they pleased - they harvested a catalogue of varied singles, EPs and two albums by 1998.
This convey-belt membership also resulted in a plethora of sonic stylings, from smallbeat Kraftwerkian Meccano Pop on debut album, ‘Popular Mechanics’ (1997) to the breathless, ethereal, multi-layered melancholy of ‘Low Birth Weight’ (1998). Only in 1999 did Piano Magic resemble anything like a conventional format group.

Smooth-talked into playing a Dutch festival which actually turned out quite well, they decided to play anywhere they were wanted and began to build something of a cult following, particularly on the European Continent. They spectacularly showcased the post-modernist baroque sound of ‘Artists’ Rifles’ (1999) at the Benicassim and BAM music festivals. Ironically, the band have never infiltrated the hearts of the British music press - out of time, unfashionable and kinda weird looking, its best not to stay home much.
Tours of Germany, Holland, Italy, Belgium, France, Spain peppered the next few years. The band signed to 4AD Records in 2000 and delivered their most critically contentious work, ‘Writers Without Homes’ and the soundtrack to Spanish director, Bigas Lunas’ ‘Son De Mar’ movie. Though oft-maligned, ‘Writers Without Homes’ was a particularly monumental milestone for the band, as it featured the first vocal recording for 33 years of lost 60’s/70’s folk heroine, Vashti Bunyan.

Belle and Sebastian Write About Love

Ah, Belle and Sebastian write about love. What else is new? The band has titled their forthcoming 8th studio album Belle and Sebastian Write About Love – after all, that is the reason why we fell in love with them in the first place.

Way back in 1996 life itself became just a little brighter with the mere existence of one of indie rocks greatest acts – Belle & Sebastian. They were like a security blanket against the twists and turns of failed relationships, shitty jobs and the general cruelty inherent in the human condition. They sung about damaged people in damaged times, but theirs was a voice of understanding and comfort that made the slog not only tolerable, but somehow beautiful. Their wit and wisdom would save many a rainy day, and when they played happy, you couldn’t help but get caught up in their infectious joy. It’s been four long years since we have heard from them, but on October 11 Belle & Sebastian will return with “Write About Love” just in time for Autumn, when they sound even better, although they always sound great.

In the run up to “Write About Love” the band has released a short 30 minute film bookend by two excellent new tracks. In between you will hear interviews about the state of the band, and most interestingly a commentary on the state of music in the age of the Internet. The film is far from a cheap promotional gimmick, instead the band turn in something interesting, thoughtful and downright thrilling after you hear their performances. Four years has been a long time to wait for a new Belle & Sebastian, but if these songs are any indication, it will have been well worth it.

Glasser - Ring

Glasser is the one-woman orchestra of Cameron Mesirow, the latest addition to the growing roster of True Panther Sounds artists, joining the likes of Delorean, Girls and Magic Kids on the New York based label, which is now also operating from London.

Glasser entered public consciousness in 2009 with her debut EP, Apply and UK-only 12” Tremel on the Young Turks label. The intimate, luxurious music resonated widely, despite being made alone by Cameron, between airplanes and shoe stores, on Garage Band software. Her EPs and live shows earned her attention from Fever Ray and Blonde Redhead producers Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid (who co-produced a few tracks and the transitions on this album) and opening tour slots with Delorean, Jónsi, and The xx.

It’s with great trepidation then that you enter the world of Egyptian Hip-Hop, a band who look like a rag-tag bunch of sixth form misfits and did little to impress with their debut single ‘Wild Human Child’ earlier in the year. The involvement of Late Of The Pier’s Sam Eastgate in this band of Mancunian dreamers is a curious one too, as it is his band that Egyptian Hip-Hop most closely resemble. The point of Some Reptiles…, then, is to prove that there is more going on in these four teenage minds than how to best copy the warped pop of their mentor.

Alongside Eastgate, Egyptian Hip-Hop have regularly championed the influence of Ariel Pink and Hudson Mohawke on their music. They have even gone so far as to recruit the latter to produce this EP and with it he brings a sense of fluidity and drive to a band who have previously appeared flighty and aimless.

Some Reptiles Developed Wings tells us a few things about Egyptian Hip-Hop. 1) They most definitely have something special; 2) It’s a long way from being realized just yet; 3) Ultimately these four boys are just weird enough to subvert the norm and create something exciting in the process.

Postcards from a Young Man is the tenth studio album by the alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. The Manics began recording the album (provisionally titled It's Not War - Just the End of Love) in October 2009 at their Faster Studio in Cardiff. Released on 20 September 2010, the album will be supported by the Manics' most extensive tour of the UK to date. James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire have both referred to the album as "one last shot at mass communication".

In an interview for the NME, Bradfield said that "We're going for big radio hits on this one ... It isn't a follow-up to Journal For Plague Lovers." Nicky Wire has said, "We've always been about infiltrating the mainstream. It was a conscious decision this time to want to hear ourselves on the radio. Our mantra at the start was, 'If you've got something to say, say it to as many people as possible'." Wire has also compared the upcoming album to the Aerosmith album Pump, saying that "It's going to be an amazing album...Send Away The Tigers was Permanent Vacation, this next one is our Pump.".

Sam Prekop - Old Punch Card

"Old Punch Card" is the third solo album by Sam Prekop with a completely unexpected sound unlike anything he's created before.

Sam Prekop is known to most as the singer and songwriter of The Sea and Cake. He is a painter of some renown, a photographer and in addition he has released two solo albums of pop songs infused with his own blend of African and Brazilian guitar rhythms. Old Punch Card, his first solo effort since 2005, takes a dramatically unexpected turn away from either of these paths. Prekop described the move thus, "I'd have to say this record is pretty much unlike anything else I've done. There's some relation to music I made for my book "Photographs" but really only in instrumentation. The intro to The Sea and Cake's David Bowie cover of "Sound and Vision", on One Bedroom is an early precedent. The most significant difference, is that I've left the confines of "song" structure." The LP and CD each come in an edition of hand painted covers. "In painting the covers I found an appropriate shorthand to describing the music or re-imagining it. Start with nothing and without deduction an image appears reflecting only itself, the music arrived similarly." said Prekop.

Taking inspiration from early music concrete and electronic music, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Nuno Canavarro, Raymond Scott, David Behrman, and free improvisation, Old Punch Card is a beautifully noisy, jagged, yet stately album of synthesizer music. The ideas and implementation of Old Punch Card (the album title alluding to the electronic, faintly mechanic origins of the music) were the result of an entirely new challenge: to do something completely different from anything else he's ever created. To facilitate this end, Prekop implemented a series of strict guidelines for the recording of the album. No vocals, no guitar (though he slipped in this regard on one track), and no beats. Most of the sound material is generated by a modular synthesizer. By its very nature, it excels at some things and not at others. It's very difficult to play a conventional chord, while on the other hand, it excels at creating completely unanticipated sounds and is rather effective when it comes to "chance" composing strategies.

Each piece is in a travelogue form, all of them starting somewhere only to end somewhere else entirely. The means of transition between the elements purpose the compositions, often starting scrambled with agitation, then resting on a mechanical pattern that proves to be serenely predictable. The title track is a perfect example of this transition. "The Silhouettes" has perhaps the most tangible melodic arc to it, and the melody was guided in response to the rhythmic drone that's underlying.

The album was recorded entirely in Prekop's home studio and monitored on headphones, allowing him to focus on the texture and dynamic of the music. Every nuance was hyper exposed and therefore had to be considered. Prekop would spend perhaps a week or more generating raw material ideas on the synthesizer, recording everything of even slight interest. Usually some element would stand out as more diverting than another and would lead him in that direction. At some point he'd then look for "sound snippets" that he found especially appealing, extract them, and then start "arranging" these "sound snippets" and then loosely build from there while also trying to stay alert for "happy accidents", chance combinations, and unexpected melody. All of the pieces were recorded between February 2009 and March 2010 but the bulk of the material was recorded in the last three winter months. The end result is a record of strangely serene beauty, leading the listener down a myriad of otherworldly paths, all the while serving as a unique path for the musician himself.

To contrast Heartland's convoluted record process, and also to cut myself a break, I recorded this EP in New York City over a week, using not much more than my violin, my Moog, a bass and a drum kit. It's closer in sound to my first album Has A Good Home than anything else. It's called A Swedish Love Story in tribute to one of my favourite films En Karlekshistoria and as a love letter to the Swedish pop stars who inspired it. This is probably the most posi record I'll ever make, enjoy the mood while it lasts.

The name “Memoryhouse” is itself, a tribute to German composer Max Richter’s seminal work and the project was originally a means to escape the paralysis of winter. "Here is this new CD. It's not a proper "full length album" that will be promoted , toured, talked about, or even acknowledged as "interesting " by me.
So far......I have been describing it to my friends as " a bunch of shit".....or "a reason to clean up my desktop"......or....."something that better not be called my next fucking album because I really dont know if I like any of it".
On the upside ....it has plenty of "Arm of Roger" moments , so those of you who are into "christian-Ween-meets Beavis and butthead meets David Lynch-Mob Gang....you might like some of it.
Actually ...it was an attempt to salvage some old left overs and apply my appreciation for Ron Camerons artwork into the music. I must admit there are a few o.k. moments.....but it has absolutely nothing to do with what I am working on for the (my) next album.

I dont intend on printing up anymore ...and I plan on burning the hard drive that holds the material in a campfire in Zion National park while Mormon Hawks fly above on 100 degree air currents and look on in relief."
